Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP) is a substance that is produced by your own blood by first isolating and then concentrating plasma. Since plasma is composed of proteins that assist with blood clotting and cell growth, it is believed that concentrating these proteins can help promote healing. Therefore, PRP injections are used to deliver PRP to damaged tissues as a way of promoting faster healing through new tissue growth.

What can I expect when having PRP injections at Ascension Pain Specialists?
When having PRP injections performed, the first thing you can expect is to have your blood drawn. The amount of blood drawn will depend upon where the PRP will be injected. Once your blood has been drawn, it will be placed in a centrifuge for about 15 minutes to isolate the plasma. The plasma will then be prepared for the injection. Finally, ultrasound imaging will be used to locate the injection site. A topical anesthetic may be used to numb the area, then the PRP will be injected. In most cases, the entire procedure takes about an hour from start to finish.
What can I expect after having PRP injections?
After receiving the injections, you will be directed to restrict your activity for the first 48 hours to help your body heal. With PRP injections the results are not immediately noticeable and it can take about 2-3 weeks before you notice results. However, tissue regeneration will continue for months after your injection.
